There are lots of stories about the origin of Kamma community. There was no difference between Kamma and Velama. They lived as one single community. Kamma was into military and used to protect the land of the kingdom. Slowly individual families have grown up into big size and it was difficult for a male member of the family to take care of the big family. Women were into Ghosha. Few people favour women to enter into public life and run the family when they were taking care of the nation. They strongly felt the need of the ban on Ghosha or Paradh of women and wrote the same on Kammalu (Tad leaves). Who favoured Ghosha became Velama.
Sadineni Rangarao has taken great pains and pleasure in collecting the data and putting the same at one place. This is a well researched book and put most of the information about Kamma community at one place. According to the information and belief Katragadda, Vasireddy, Suryadevara, Devabhaktuni, Chava, Chirumamilla, Mikkilineni, Yarlagadda, Ravella and Sayapaneni are known as peddakamma and remaining surnames are known as chinnakamma. Now there is no difference as such. All are living as one single community. Kammavari Illaperlu and Vaduka Gotramulu is one of the best resources available for Kamma community to know about their Gotram and their relationships. According to this book, Kammas are entrepreneurs, educationalists and agriculturists and most powerful since ancient times. Importance of the Kamma community is growing and developing in recent times.
